Straightening teeth using orthodontics is one of the best ways to create a healthier smile overall. Wearing Invisalign® clear aligners can give you an aligned bite that can keep teeth healthy and strong. Crooked teeth are way harder to brush and floss thoroughly, making them easy targets for tooth decay, cavities, gingivitis and periodontal disease.
Maintaining a strong oral hygiene routine while having your teeth straightened means getting rid of stuck food particles, and breaking up harmful dental plaque. You want to constantly be disturbing plaque formation by clearing it away daily. Brushing is also great for the gums as it stimulates healthy gum tissue.
How To Clean Your Teeth While Straightening Them
The first step of caring for your smile is to take out your aligners and brush your teeth thoroughly.
The best times for doing this are after you wake up, after eating and before you go to bed.
Brushing Duration: Two minutes for each session is ideal, allowing you to clean both the top, bottom, right and left sides. Clean both the outside and inside tooth surfaces. To make sure you are brushing your teeth long enough, pull up a song on your phone’s playlist or set a timer when using an electric toothbrush.
Brushing Technique: Angle your toothbrush over several teeth at the bottom where they meet the gingival tissue. Use a circular motion 4-5 times for each set of teeth, cleaning both the sides and tops.
Toothbrush Style: A soft-bristled toothbrush is ideal, which will clean well while protecting tooth enamel and gum tissue.
Toothpaste: A fluoride toothpaste can help strengthen your tooth enamel so your teeth stay strong while you are straightening them. You only need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
Flossing: Don’t forget to floss once a day between your teeth and around the gum line because your toothbrush can’t reach those areas. Rinse with a mouthwash after flossing to keep your teeth and gums in tip-top condition!
