October is National Orthodontic Health Month and it’s also Halloween with all of its spooky goodness! If you are considering orthodontic treatment, you’re in for an extra treat if you choose Invisalign® over braces! That’s because you can take your aligners out to eat whatever candy you like (not just the soft ones that can only be eaten when wearing braces to avoid damaging the braces metal work with its wires and brackets) and costly and potential time-consuming fixes.
Good Oral Hygiene
That means you can also thoroughly clean your teeth after eating whatever candy you enjoy, so you don’t have to worry about cavities sneaking in. While people wearing braces do have to skip all the hard, chewy, sticky, nutty treats like taffies, caramels, and nut-filled peanut butter during their time in braces to make sure nothing is damaged, you won’t.
With Invisalign, you can still enjoy all your favorite holiday treats and still keep your teeth safe by brushing and flossing well before putting your aligners back in. If for some reason you can’t brush and floss right away, be sure to rinse thoroughly with water to help remove the sticky residue that feeds plaque until you can.
Acids and Tooth Enamel
This is especially important when eating sour candies that contain a large amount of acid. Since eating a lot of acidic treats can damage tooth enamel, save those for special occasions (like Halloween!) and then clean your teeth thoroughly afterward. When tooth enamel is weakened you can end up with cavities and brittle teeth, even exposing tooth nerves. Also, remember that hard candies take longer to dissolve so the teeth are bathed in both sugar and acid and the sugar stays in your mouth longer.
Another great thing about Invisalign is that you won’t have to worry about your teeth having white spots which are possible when braces come off. Instead, when you are done with your Invisalign treatment your teeth can look straightened, bright and healthy so your smile can dazzle! Just remember to always take good care of your teeth even if you are wearing aligners to straighten teeth.
