Reasons for Starting Early Treatment

Orthodontics at an Early Age

Although Dr. Igel has the ability to help patients of all ages improve their smile and achieve the long-term results they have always hoped for, he, along with the American Association of Orthodontists, recommends that children first see an orthodontist at the age of 7.  While treatment for orthodontic issues may not begin at this early age, future problems can be evaluated and planned for so that the best possible treatment options can be implemented.

There are many benefits associated with starting treatment at an early age. When Dr. Igel evaluates a young child, he is better able detect any issues in advance, especially before they become a major issue for the patient and gives him the chance to create a solution that works for the patient. If treatment is not necessary right away, Dr. Igel can easily begin monitoring the teeth of the patient, ultimately deciding on the right moment to start treatment.

Early orthodontic treatment also helps to reduce many risks; including having teeth extracted and reducing the amount of time that the child will need to have braces. Conventional wisdom says that it is advised for a patient to receive treatment as early as they possibly can, and in the case of orthodontics, this is entirely true. Early treatment leads to early prevention.

Keeping the teeth healthy and in good shape starts at a very early age. Even if you think your child is too young to need orthodontic treatment, if your child is 7 years old or older, now is a good time to schedule an appointment for an evaluation with Dr. Igel.
