What to Expect During Your Initial Orthodontic Screening

Posted .

Are you considering orthodontic treatment, but aren’t sure what to expect during your initial screening? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many people are nervous about going to the orthodontist for the first time.  Knowing what to expect can help ease your anxiety and prepare you for the best possible orthodontic experience. Here’s what you can expect during your initial orthodontic screening.

Orthodontic Consultation

First, you’ll need to schedule an appointment with our orthodontic team. During your first visit, one of our orthodontists will review your medical and dental history and conduct a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth and jaw. We will use this information to determine if you need orthodontic treatment and what type of treatment would be best for your unique needs.

Digital Scanning

The i-CAT 3D imaging system allows us to generate a 3D rendering of the face, teeth and jaws to provide fast, comfortable, safe and effective imaging for the most precise orthodontic diagnoses possible. Our orthodontists can clearly visualize the teeth, roots, sinuses and airways along with hard and soft tissues for greater precision in planning and treatment choices.

Another oral screening process we are proud to use is digital scanning, making messy impressions a thing of the past! Igel Orthodontics is one the few practices that uses an iTero® digital scanner in Omaha, Nebraska, to scan a patient’s mouth and teeth to create 3D images for Invisalign aligners, oral appliances or removable retainers.

After the examination and x-rays, one of our orthodontists will discuss the findings with you and recommend a treatment plan. This may include braces, aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. We will also explain the length of treatment, any potential risks or complications and the cost of your treatment. You’ll have the opportunity to ask questions and voice any concerns you may have.

Orthodontic Treatment

If you do need orthodontic treatment, you will schedule a follow-up appointment to begin the process. This may include taking additional molds of your teeth, getting fitted for braces or aligners or having teeth extracted. Our team will provide you with instructions on how to care for your braces or aligners and what foods you’ll need to avoid.

It’s important to note that orthodontic treatment is a process that requires patience and commitment. You’ll need to attend regular appointments with our office to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. You may experience some discomfort or soreness during the first few days of treatment, but this typically subsides quickly.

In terms of duration, the length of treatment varies depending on the severity of your orthodontic issues. Some people may only need braces or aligners for a few months, while others may require treatment for longer. Our orthodontists will give you an estimated timeline during your initial screening, but it’s important to keep in mind that this can change as your treatment progresses.
